Ever had a nice finished pencil drawing, all shaded, and thought; I
bet it would look colored! There might be a chance you ended up
thinking; never again! I just ruined it! Sounds familiar? (even if not,
it doesn’t hurt to read on =3)
Just like I did in part B, I’ll first show what probably the major problem is.
Hmm… poor guys! D= They look too grey and too dark… Even my scanner agrees with that! (it wanted to scan these in grey scale O_o) But yeah… from left to right this is a big problem;
1. just colored skin tone on top of the grey pencil
2. the same, but tried to erase it a bit. And that’s probably the meanest thing! It’s (almost?) impossible to erase this completely, without tearing up the paper! There goes a drawing you spent hours on!
3. maybe lighting it up with a white pencil instead? Well, it does do a little..
4. first a layer of white, and then the skin tone? =S
Well, both 3 and 4 do a little.. and if you’re looking for a way to save a drawing that already looks like the first, this is a good method (keep on coloring a white layer on it, followed by the skin tone, white layer, skin tone, until it’s at least decent again!) Here again in short:
The last one is done with the white – skin tone –white –skin tone method, and it looks quite okay, doesn’t it?
But! There should be a better way, shouldn’t there? Oh, there is! =3 But first:
The drawing I made for the tutorial =B It’s drawn quite quickly, but it’ll do I guess.
On to coloring! Or..? Well, there are 2 things you can do: option 1 is to copy the drawing and color the copy; the grey drawing pencil won’t be able to give you any trouble then. Option 2; color the actual artwork (this is what I usually do =3) But how?
Remember what I said you need for coloring? Something like… eraser? And don’t call it blasphemy just yet! D=
Because who said I’m letting you erase all the shading you probably spent hours on?
What to do: look for the darkest shadows and lighten them up a bit. Make sure the eraser gets grey-blackish from the graphite.. then go over the rest from the drawing; when you’re doing it right it looks as if nothing is really changing (except it looks as if you’re smudging a bit) , and while ‘erasing’ it feels as if you’re gliding over the paper… Wondering what you’re doing?
Well, it’s kind of smoothing, but the parts with very loose graphite on it are ‘cleaned a little’ (=3) as I will call it for now. The things you should erase completely though, are the irises. I want a bit of a tanned skin color this time, so I can leave quite a bit of grey. If you want a very light tone, you will have to lighten all shadows first. (You might want to test a few sketches first, before starting on a finished drawing =B)
This is the way it looks for now. It does look cleaner, doesn’t it? Well, why not give it a try? Grab the coloring pencils for the skin tone! =3 And don’t worry if it still looks quite dark, the lighting up will be done later on. A quick scan to see how it looks after the first layer of color:
It does look pretty dark, I know, but ignore it for the time being and color the skin the same way you did during part B. (make sure the original skin tone covers the grey enough. In my scan the upper part is OK, the under part of the face needs some more ‘ground’ color.)
The one on the left has 3 colors added (brown, orange, yellow) The one on the right has the purple-green extra shading. And now? It’s dark isn’t it? Lighten it up a bit! How? …=3 Very simple. Grab a piece of toilet paper again and smudge. (on some sorts of paper, only smudging already makes it a lot lighter.. Make sure to test this!)
Not on this copier paper, it seems… So, color again with the original skin tone. Then color on top of that with a white coloring pencil, then again skin tone. You can repeat this step as often as you want; it’s useful to smudge sometimes though.
Mine looks like this now =3 I said I wanted it a bit tanned, right? Well, I like it!
Let’s give him a bit more of an expression by coloring the eyes =) I think green eyes would look good on him… Therefore, I’ll start with yellow! (Make sure you’ve erased the grey in the irises first!)
Color around the pupil. It’s okay to press quite hard here. Second color; light-green! Press a little here too.
Well, very bright eyes, aren’t they..? Grab the dark green, color the pupil completely, as wel as the outlines of the eyes (I like the iris outlines to be dark =3. Also, color lightly over the yellow and bright green)
That looks more human, doesn’t it? The pupil still is dark green, though.. I used a dark blue pencil to make some lines in the irises and a black one tot color the upper part of the pupil.
(The scanner ruined it a little by putting the contrast very high, but oh well >_<) If you think the eyes are too bright, color on them with a grey coloring pencil (not a drawing pencil!). I like eyes bright though (makes them a bit exotic =3) , so I’ll leave them like this.
Next thing.. Hair! I’ll be honest with you, I don’t think I’m very good at drawing/coloring hair, so be warned =X
I want his hair to be black. =3 (If you want a light color instead, make sure to use the eraser first..) And you’re probably be guessing now... Because of course I won’t start with the black coloring pencil! That’d be too easy, eh? I’ll start with dark blue instead.
First, just draw the outlines. I erased a bit of the grey for lighting, then used a light blue for coloring a first layer:
Continue with the dark blue
Already looks better =3 You don’t need to stay inside the lines all the time; here I drew a few additional strands of hair. I also used a little white for the hair in the one below;
The first layer of black =3
And the second and last layer X3 (scanner made it a little darker again, though) I edited the whole a little; added some white here and there, put a light layer of blue on the eyes.. And made sure I got a better scan of it X3
And here it is:
You can say what you want, but I don’t feel like I’ve ruined a pencil drawing… =3
Finished drawing.. (except for the clothes, but I’m lazy X3)
